World building: Languages

Have you ever wanted the people in your story to speak a completely new language?

I found this fantastic video – a must watch for anyone interested in inventing a new language. It goes into styles of script, how to map sounds to that script, and even how the technologies available to certain societies affect the ways in which that society can write. If you write on paper, for example, you will use gentle, round marks that don’t cause tearing, whereas if you write in stone you will use big, bold straight marks because curves are too hard to carve.

I hope to find more articles and videos about world building in future to build a little reference library on this site – sometimes it seems like an inexhaustibly large subject, but one that will teach you all sorts of art, history, geography and politics of the real world too.

Enjoy!
